The Great Indian Middle Class Businessman

For the past 8 months, I have been working with a few Indian businesses, and I am writing this to introduce this category of businessman to you, and why I thought of working for them. I call them the “Great Indian Middle Class Businessman.” It’s not the middle class you think of, and they would probably fall in “Upper Middle Class” by your definition. Let me explain this term to you.

Let’s start with “Great”. These businessmen are great because of a few reasons. To start with, unlike startups, they have bootstrapped businesses which means they have been able to find a way to fund their operations so that they can run over a long term, pay their employees’ salary, and yet make enough to invest back in their businesses and make a comfortable living for their families. Secondly, great, because they have created businesses worth several crores of turnover out of Tier 2, and Tier 3 cities in India, serving mostly local markets, and now, expanding across. They don’t have the best of salesperson, the best of talent, and to top it, they have more cumbersome regulations to deal with. But, still have managed to generate revenue worth of crores sustain-ably, something that many funded startups have struggled to achieve. And, lastly, great because they see opportunities, like no one does. They find business opportunities in very niche, high competition industries as well, for example…
